U18 Middlesex Sevens
The 1st VII continued their rich vein of form at the Middlesex Sevens Tournament at St Benedict’s School last Wednesday. A competition that is packed full of strong teams throughout each of the four groups, our group was no exception as we found ourselves drawn against two academy rugby schools and a strong RGS Guildford team. After two convincing wins in our first two matches, we found ourselves against Bishop Wand School, with the winner of the game coming out as overall groups winners. The opposition had looked strong throughout the tournament and if SPS were to win the game, we knew that we had to take our current good form to the next level. The SPS boys did just that by giving Bishop Wand absolutely no time on the ball, and forcing them into mistakes that allowed us to dominate possession and win the game by a comfortable score of 24-12. The result took us through to the semi-final against a very strong team and tournament favourites Harrow. Sadly, we didn’t produce the same quality of rugby sevens that we had earlier in the day, partly through showing Harrow too much respect and allowing them to dominate possession but mostly down to their sheer strength and athleticism. However, the SPS team should be very proud of their performance throughout the day; this was exemplified when they watched Harrow make easy work of Millfield, beating them 38-14 in the final.
Congratulations to the whole 1st VII Squad for their outstanding effort.
Worth School U16 Sevens
The U16s had an impressive day at the Worth 7s – St Paul’s came first in their group which included an impressive 45-0 win against Dulwich. They also came back from 14-0 down to snatch a superb victory over a strong Lord Wandsworth team. This meant the team qualified for the main cup semi final against Wellington College – the team fought really hard, but Wellington pulled away to score two late tries in the last two minutes. This was a great result considering the St Paul’s team was missing Jacob Bethell and Mani Del, who were playing for Harlequins EPG. They should look forward with confidence to the Nationals in a fortnight.
Worth School U18 Sevens
The U18 squad made a slow start to the Worth School tournament on Sunday. Unforced errors and decision making saw the team lose their first two matches against Tonbridge School and Hurst School respectively. However, they bounced back to beat the Brighton College 2nd VII and qualified for the Vase Semi-Final. The squad finally found their groove by beating Reigate School 33-0 and winning the Vase by beating New Hall School 41-19. Well done to all those who represented the school.
