Yesterday, we travelled to Harrow School to participate in the ECF School Blitz tournament, where we were able to secure first place after 12 gruelling rounds throughout the day.
The first half of the tournament went smoothly, after a slow start by some of us in the first round. We quickly picked up steam and rounds two, three and four went quite smoothly. Though we faced some stronger opponents during the fifth and sixth rounds, we were able to keep losses at a minimum and successfully maintain second place with three points behind Wilson’s, one of the best chess schools in the country.
After a nice one hour break, we were re-energised and ready to finish the second half. Unfortunately, due to a certain rule by the organisers, we were paired against our own teammates for the seventh, eighth and ninth rounds, which slightly set us back as we couldn’t gain many points. Thankfully, in the last two rounds, we left that issue behind and secured a decent amount of wins. In the end, we won with twp points ahead of Wilson’s, especially thanks to a stellar performance by Liam, who achieved the second best score individually with a score of 10/12.
