21 Paulines from across all year groups took part in the Schools National Fives Championships over the Easter holidays.
In the U14 singles, Theo, Eamon and Dilan (all Fourth Form) made it out of the group stage into to the main knockout competition. Marmaduke (Fourth Form) won the second plate. In the U14 doubles, our four pairs came up against strong opposition who had mostly been playing fives for a lot longer. Eamon and Theo came within a whisker of winning the plate.
In the U18 singles, there were excellent wins for Charles, Will, Ben (all Upper Eighth) and Sol (Lower Eighth), with Will making it to the last eight. In the doubles, Ben & Will (Lower Eighth), Sol & Alex, and Charles & Will (Upper Eighth) had good wins, with Charles and Will making it to the last eight.
In the U16 doubles, Freddie & Josh (both Fifth Form) made it to the semi-finals, losing in two agonisingly close games to the eventual winners.
Our star player of the tournament was Freddie (Fifth Form), who was crowned national U16 singles champion. He achieved this whilst still an U15 – becoming only the third Pauline ever to do this – the last time being 24 years ago. We fully expect Freddie to win it again next year – no pressure.
