Sports Round-up – 3 May 2023

CRICKET

It was a remarkable day on Saturday for SPS cricket. We won 8 out of the 9 fixtures against Dulwich, with only the U15Bs losing narrowly.

The 1st XI beat Dulwich by 9 wickets with the captain K. Patel scoring his second half century of the season in as many games, backed up by 42 from N. Malik (who hit his second ball over the Dulwich Pavilion).  T. Katzenellenbogen (Fifth Form) very much secured his place in the side with another 3-wicket haul, and A. Rajkumar also took 3 wickets.

The 2nd, 3rd and 4th XI teams all won by 100 runs or more.

Standout performances for the 2nd XI include 43 from F. Carter and 40 from N. Dahl, as well as 3 wickets each for the fast-bowling unit of J. Leigh, J. Brecker, A. Chaudhary and T. Salter. K. Srivastava was the star for the 3rd XI with 88 not out batting at 9 and four wickets, including a hat-trick. For the 4th XI, expertly umpired and scored by stand-in coach Mr Watkins, N. Dhar made 50, M. Mehta 39, with three wickets for both E. Beatie and A. Mathur.

The U15As also won by 100 runs, continuing the theme of the weekend, with D. Jansen making 36, and 3 wickets each for S. Gani and T. Ritchie.

In the U15Bs, A. Twinch had a great afternoon with the ball, taking 4 wickets for 11 runs.

The U14As won by 85 runs with standout performances from F. de Mestre (4 wickets and 26 runs), T. Prasad (4 wickets) and T. Raaj (38 runs). L. Shikder’s 58 not out helped the U15Bs to a 90 run win, while 65 from N. Younis helped secure a 6 wicket victory for the U14Cs. A fantastic effort from all players and staff.

SWIMMING

Cillian Bramham (Fifth Form) achieved gold medals in the 4 x 100m and 4 x 200m freestyle relays as part of the Camden Swiss Cottage Swimming team in the London Regional Championships. He also achieved 3 individual silver medals in the 200m, 400m and 800m freestyle events as well as making the finals of the 200m backstroke and 200m individual medley events.

Wilder Daffey, Anderson Daffey and Rufus Poole qualified for Summer Regionals Championships. Wilder Daffey came 8th in 400 individual medley; Anderson Daffey made the final in 200 breaststroke coming 5th with a PB of 2 minutes and 40 seconds; Rufus Poole came 4th in 1500 free with a PB of 18 minutes and 7 seconds.

CLIMBING

SPS climbers Noah Leach, Jash Jhaveri, Alexei German, Archie Macrae, Alexander Read, Parker Whiting, Kian Cser and Atom Lucenet took part in the Substation Interschools Bouldering competition in Brixton on Saturday. Missing the experienced climbers from the Upper Eighth, the junior boys put in very spirited performances, but were marginally beaten on points in the end by St Dunstan’s.
