On Saturday 1 October, around 60 pupils (including several Third Years from St Paul’s Juniors) joined the inaugural SPS Games & ComicCon event.
A real highlight of the event was two manga drawing workshops in the Kayton Library from Carnegie Medal shortlisted artist, Chie Kutsuwada, who led us through a brief history of Japanese illustration and her own creative processes before giving pupils the opportunity to create their own manga-inspired artworks. We also enjoyed talks on other game and comic-related topics, including Mr Arnold on Otherness in Marvel’s X-men comics, Mrs Zalar on her work with US games giant Valve, and Upper Eighth pupil Harry on his BAFTA award-winning game design.
In addition, there were all-day opportunities to play Dungeons & Dragons, Warhammer, vintage Nintendo video games, and other strategy games ranging from short role-playing card games to epic table-top strategy battles lasting several hours. Building on this successful ‘test event’, plans are already in motion for next year’s ComicCon – watch this space!
