SPS Model United Nations Conference

SPS hosted our seventh Model United Nations conference, jointly with St Paul’s Girls’ School. More than 200 pupils from 18 different schools came together to represent 35 different countries on six UN committees.

Issues they debated included: Managing tensions in Kashmir; The humanitarian crisis in Sudan; Preventing future pandemics; Transitioning from fossil fuels to renewable energy; Territorial disputes between Guyana and Venezuela; The safety of atomic energy production; Use of lethal autonomous weapons and drone warfare; Nuclear non-proliferation in Iran; Global food insecurity and debt; Migrant workers’ rights in the Middle East; and The political representation of indigenous communities.

The final event of the day was a General Assembly ‘crisis’ debate, on the topic of a possible Russian and Chinese military base in the Antarctic.  Upper Eighth pupils Henrik Helsen, Lucas Nahal and Dhruva Suraj directed and organised the conference; committees were chaired by Behruz Ahmedov, Max Clapham, Xavi Costafreda-Fu, Rohan George, Aarush Ranjan, Aidan Wong; Lower Eighth’s Cillian Bramham, Aarav Kushagra, Teddy Niedringhaus, Aden Si-Ahmed, Adrian Siniscalco, Luca Orlandi, Andy Wang, and SPGS pupils.

Huge thanks to all for their hard work and organisational skills, and many thanks also to Mr Garnett and Mr Skidmore for helping with this highly successful conference.
