A round up of all sporting activities this week at St Paul’s Prep School

Table Tennis

Nikolas K in Upper Third competed in the Mark Bates U15 National Table Tennis Championships this past Sunday at the David Ross Sports Village in the University of Nottingham. He was very proud to qualify after an intense year of consistent training and tournaments. He competed in the singles tournament and in the doubles where he and his partner were knocked out by the top seeds at the quarter finals stage. A fine effort and a potential future Olympian I am sure!

Cross Country and Athletics

Two boys stand outdoors at athletic events. The boy on the left smiles holding a medal, wearing a blue shirt with race number 78 on a running track. The boy on the right, in a yellow-red vest with number 1804, stands on grass among people.

Early last Saturday morning in Nottingham, Surya K (right)competed in the Cross Country Nationals. After warming up and learning about the unusual course which involved a huge hill at the very start and end of the race, a cruel twist, he lined up at the start line. There are so many people, 315 in all, that the race organisers had pens, with small plastic gates separating athletes to give every team a line on the front. Surya started 4th in the team after 2 runners dropped out. After a chaotic false start he pushed on through a crowded and windy course and managed to regain most of the lost positions to come a very good 56th, a huge improvement from last years 92nd (but running a year young). Great preparation for another big run next week in Liverpool, running a year young again.

Sunjeev N (left) took part in the QuadKids athletics competition yesterday, organised by Kingston Athletic Club. It was attended by children from a number of athletic clubs in Surrey and surroundings. We are pleased to share the news that he came first in the overall combined points table for U10 Boys. He also came first in the 50m sprint (8.43s) and 300m run (51.98s). A brilliant effort.

Football

SPPS won the annual U10 Primary Schools tournament, which we host each year. Despite damp and murky conditions, the boys played superbly across seven games to emerge as deserved winners after an afternoon of excellent football and fierce competition.

On Saturday the U12s and U13s faced Dulwich College, home and away respectively. Dulwich enjoyed the better results overall, but most matches were closely contested and evenly matched. Congratulations to the U13E, who secured the only win of the day with a thrilling 7-5 victory.

On Monday the U13s were back in action at home against old rivals Dulwich Prep. The A, C and D teams were narrowly defeated, while the E team claimed a close win and the F team lost by the odd goal in another tight contest.

Tuesday brought a visit from UCS (a fine institution that produces fine young men) at U11 level, fielding four sides (A-D). Traditionally a strong opponent at this age group, it proved an excellent afternoon of football: the A team won a thriller, the B team drew, the C team won, and the D team narrowly lost.

Later in the week the Lower First welcomed Wetherby to Lonsdale Road during the morning games session. Although results generally favoured the visitors, Mr Ferdinand’s D team flew the SPPS flag with a hard-fought victory. Many thanks to all the parents who came along to offer their always positive and vocal support.
