This summer, St Paul’s pupil Adavya (who will begin Upper Eighth in September) has represented the UK at three major international academic Olympiads, earning medals across mathematics and informatics. He also earned a coveted spot at the Americans’ Mathematical Olympiad Program (MOP), a rare and prestigious invitation extended to UK students for the first time in recent history.
The MOP is a highly selective training camp held at the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy (IMSA) in Aurora, Illinois. The event gathers some of the most talented young mathematicians from around the world to prepare for the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO). Adavya demonstrated impressive commitment to this unique opportunity, even forfeiting his place on the UK team for the International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) due to overlapping dates, a decision driven by a deep love of mathematics.
Following the camp, Adavya was selected to represent the UK at the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) 2025 in Sunshine Coast, Australia, where he won a Bronze Medal. The UK team placed 16th out of 110 countries, a strong international showing.
Shortly afterward, Adavya also competed in the International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI) 2025 in Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia, bringing home another Bronze Medal for the UK. Additionally, he earned a Gold Medal in the Western European Olympiad in Informatics (WEOI) via remote participation earlier in the year.
Adavya’s family acknowledged the school’s “unwavering support that Mrs Huang, Dr Langley, and the wider St Paul’s team continue to provide” as being instrumental in enabling him to seize these remarkable opportunities. His achievements have not gone unnoticed: the UK IMO team has been invited to a formal reception at 10 Downing Street later this September to honour their performance.
Reflecting on his journey, Adavya shared: “Don’t be afraid to work hard on whatever you are truly passionate about; you never know where it might one day take you.”
With three international medals across two disciplines, Adavya has firmly established himself as one of the UK’s most accomplished young problem solvers. His dedication and humility make him a remarkable ambassador for St Paul’s, and Mrs Huang (High Master) said “Adavya is a conscientious and exceptional Pauline”.
