St. Paul’s Athletics Team achieve second place at the Guy Butler Shield Athletics Meeting.
St. Paul’s Athletics Team performed extremely well at the Guy Butler Shield Athletics Meeting, finishing runners-up behind the hosts Harrow and just in front of Eton who finished 3rd. The Senior and Inter teams performed superbly well to secure 2nd place at arguably one of the most competitive school boy athletics fixtures in the country.
Special mentions to David Nartey, Oliver Hill, Max Buckley, Harry Strauss, Will Palmer, Philip Kastner, Gregory Zoppos, James Grindle, Sam Little and William Hitchcock for winning their respective events. Gregory Zoppos, Will Palmer, Philip Kastner and Tom White also excelled in the Inters 4x400m relay finishing in 1st place, just as they did at the Achilles Relays.
Five athletes who deserve a special mention for their outstanding performances at the Guy Butler Shield: Phil Kastner for winning 4 individual events, plus a leg of the victorious 4x400m relay and being awarded best U17 performance of the day; Max Buckley for taking 3.5 seconds off his 800m PB and winning the 800m and 400m; Will Palmer for winning the Inter 800m with a PB of 2.05.17, plus a leg of the victorious 4x400m relay; Tom White for coming 1st and 2nd in the Inter 200m and 100m respectively, plus a leg of the victorious 4x400m relay; Will Hitchcock for winning the Junior 800m with a PB of 2.14.05.
Considering we were a few athletes light due to injury, the team really pulled together to perform to the best of their ability and fully deserved to finish in a very encouraging 2nd place.
More success for the Inters and Junior relay teams at the Radley Relays
At the Medley Relays, hosted by Radley College, the Inter Relay Team, James Grindle, Will Palmer, Tom White and Gregory Zoppos won the Medley Relay in a time of 3.54.8s and the same four boys, also came 2nd in the 4x100m relay in a time 46.7s. This was their eighth relay race in three separate meetings over six days, and along with Phil Kastner, the five boys have not been beaten in a 4x400m relay this year, an outstanding achievement and bodes well for the future of 4x400m relay running at St. Paul’s School.
In the Under 15 age group Joshua Zhao, Sasha Shevchuk, Daniel Monferrer and William Hitchcock also ran well to finish up in 3rd place in the Medley Relay. The St. Paul’s U15 B Medley relay team, Calvin Leung, Thomas Chappell-Pike, Ramon Garcia Rodenas and Monty Brown also ran a very good Medley race and finished up in 6th place overall.
