Thomas (Fifth Form) recently participated in an under 18 ITF (International Tennis Federation) tournament in the Republic of Ireland.
After winning three matches convincingly in the qualifying rounds, he went on to play in the main draw against the No1 Irish player his age, whom he beat in a tough match. Thomas was down 2-5 with a set point against him. He came back to win the first set 7-5 and then the next 6-0 in an extraordinary comeback, which was a stark reminder that grit and stamina trump all else at this level.
These are Thomas’ first ITF points, marking a major milestone in any tennis player’s career. He is now one of only three 2008 boys in the UK with ITF points, all the more remarkable since he was unable to practice for most of 2021 due to uniquely penalising medical circumstances. The photo shows Thomas coming off court after the win – the smile says it all.
