Titus

This term’s senior production was a visceral and thought-provoking interpretation of Shakespeare’s gruesome early work, Titus Andronicus.

Set in an apocalyptic desert wasteland, Titus wages war to protect the last bastion of civilisation from the barbarian hordes. But the very principles which Titus stands for set in motion a chain of events of barely conceivable cruelty. Shakespeare’s first, yet most strikingly modern, tragedy exploded on to the school stage in a riot of blood, fire and the blackest of comedy.

A commanding yet sensitive interpretation of the title role from George Lyons stood at the centre of a fine ensemble cast, with excellent support from Harry Cotterell as Saturninus, eldest son of the deceased Emperor, and Macnair Stallworthy as Aaron, the slave captured by the Moors. Credit also must go to the technical crew for the coordination of an extraordinary amount of weaponry, blood and gore!
