On the evening of Tuesday 29 November, St Paul’s hosted and won a regional heat of the Royal Society of Chemistry’s Top of the Bench competition.
Eleven other schools, including near neighbours St Paul’s Girls’ School and Harrodian, brought teams to undertake a series of practical challenges and theory problems. The combined scores of the SPS team – James Williams (Sixth Form), Mikhail Zubarev (Fifth Form), Anders Rossbach and James Gronow (both Fourth Form) – were enough to beat City of London Freemen’s School to first place. James was the highest-scoring Year 11 pupil in the competition and Mikhail was the highest-scoring Year 10. Anders and James combined to earn the best Year 9 score in the practical challenge. We now await results from other regional heats to see if SPS will be invited to the national finals in 2023.
