Duncan Wong (Lower Eighth) was the runner up in the Economics category of Northeastern University London’s (formerly known as New College of the Humanities) Year 12 Essay Competition.
The question was ‘What are the most likely implications of the economic sanctions imposed on Russia?’
As well as discussing the economic and financial impact on Russia from various sanctions policies, Duncan also looked into the impact those policies had at home. His insight that sanctions can have large opportunity cost and should be seen as a double-edged sword is an excellent and powerful one which explained a large part of the cost of living crisis that the UK is going through.
Congratulations also to Jonah Collett (Lower Eighth) whose essay “What would have to change about ‘democracy’ in order to restore faith in democracy among young people?” was Highly Commended in the Politics category of the competition.
Lower Eighth historian, Angel Ellis, was also a Finalist in the History competition. His essay addressed the question: “What can historians learn from the study of past empires and imperialism?”. The competition received over 4,500 entries across all categories so, although he did not win, being a Finalist places him in the top 6% of entries.
