Diversity, Equality & Inclusion

Vision Statement:
Ensuring that St Paul’s School is a place where every person, regardless of their identity, can find success whilst being their most authentic self.

Diversity, Equality and Inclusion are the foundation of a St Paul’s education. The school was founded on the notion that boys ‘of all nacions and countres’ should be taught ‘indifferently’, and today, our vision remains the same. In an ever-changing world, it is increasingly important that St Paul’s is a place where students and staff are free to be who they are, and, in doing so, we develop our ability to exist and thrive in a diverse world.

“Education is an integral part of a successful approach to diversity, equality and inclusion. At St Paul’s, the world-class education which our students receive is a perfect conduit for developing inclusive behaviours and instils a sense of responsibility and civic duty across our whole community.”
Tyler John (he/they), Head of Diversity, Equality and Inclusion

Our approach to Diversity, Equality and Inclusion:

Our approach to diversity, equality and inclusion (DEI) is an interdisciplinary one, embedded across all aspects of school life. From the curriculum, to extra-curricular societies, to the staff experience and recruitment, we are creating spaces throughout our community where all of our people, pupils and staff alike, can think critically about how they can use their voices.

Students have a range of exciting opportunities to engage with this work during their time here. Throughout the academic year, with the help of various student societies, we celebrate a vast array of cultural occasions, such as LGBTQ+ History Month and Black History Month, to highlight and educate on the diversity of experiences across the school. For students who are passionate about shaping the strategic direction of our work, our Inclusion Alliance is a forum which allows students to think collaboratively with staff about DEI issue they care about. DEI is also embedded throughout our PSHE curriculum and gives students the space to think critically about contemporary topics such as gender, race, and sexuality, in a safe, judgement-free environment.

It is also important that we consider the staff experience within our DEI agenda. To ensure that our staff body is the best it can be, in both skill and how it reflects the world around us, we are focusing on how we find, retain and develop talent, by investing in recruitment, training, and examining the wider staff experience.

Diversity, Equality and Inclusion Strategy

Our DEI strategy focuses on six strategic priorities

  1. Understanding our Community – collecting, storing and analysing data on our staff and students communities to better understand the needs of our people.
  2. Marketing and Brand – ensuring that we fully consider DEI as we further develop the identity of the school.
  3. Recruitment – diversifying our recruitment practices for both staff and students, to ensure a diverse breadth of applicants which is reflective of a changing world
  4. Student Experience – focusing on ensuring that the student experience from day 1 is as inclusive as possible, and that nobody’s identity inhibits their chances of success.
  5. Employee Experience – focusing on ensuring that the staff experience is as inclusive as possibly, so that we continue to be a desirable place to work.
  6. Active Anti-Racism – demonstrating active anti-racism efforts, so that race and/or ethnicity are never barriers to achievement.
