Ways to Give

By making a regular contribution to the school, you are helping us to lay a strong foundation and plan for the long term. Regular gifts can be made by direct debit or standing order on a monthly, quarterly or annual basis.

The 1509 Society is our regular giving society, named after the St Paul’s School founding year. It encourages regular monthly gifts of up to £5,000 per year to our Widening Access bursary campaign. You can donate any amount of your choice or relate it to our founding year, such as £1.59, £15.09, £150.90, or £1,509. Alternatively, the 1509 Society also welcomes single gifts of £500 or more.

The 1509 Society has been championed since 2016 by two Old Paulines who successfully encouraged OPs to give at the £50 level in groups to raise an annual bursary. If 57 OPs contribute £50 per month, it raises £34,200 a year – 110% funding for one pupil’s fees and extras. They saw such groups being built around old friendships, profession groups, year groups and sports.

Our pupil-led Thomas Gresham Committee (who fundraise specifically for the Thomas Gresham Bursary) will be encouraging leavers to sign up to the £1.59 level as a sign of their commitment to the school’s values.

Supporters who donate £5,000 or more per annum to any campaign element or make a one-off gift of £5,000 or above are offered membership to the Erasmus, High Master’s, and Founder’s Circle. The full recognition model is available below.

For many, making a gift in their Will represents the most significant donation they will give in their lifetime. Such a gift to St Paul’s leaves a lasting impact, enriching the lives of countless future Paulines through the invaluable gift of education. The Colet Society was established in 2019 as a way of expressing gratitude to those who intend to leave a gift in their will for St Paul’s School. The society is always pleased to welcome new members.

As a member of the Colet Society, you and your family will receive invitations to special school events throughout the year, such as the school’s Carol Service. You will also have the opportunity to visit the school during term time to see the modern school and staff in action. Additionally, members of the society will have their name recognised in the Annual Philanthropy Report and receive a Colet Society tie or pin badge.

Aside from the impact such gifts have on the school, any sum you bequeath to
St Paul’s is not only free of tax, but it may also reduce the overall tax liability due on your estate.

How do I leave a gift in my Will to St Paul’s School?

When you leave a gift in your Will to St Paul’s you can specify how you would like it to be used by us. You may wish to support a specific area such as bursaries, capital projects or the area of greatest need within the school.

Free Will Writing Services

St Paul’s is delighted to have partnered with Octopus Legacy to offer our supporters the opportunity to make a will online for free (T&Cs apply)

This new approach to Will-making is quick and easy. So we can offer our supporters this service; St Paul’s pays a small fee to Octopus Legacy for each Will completed with a gift left to the charity.

There is no obligation to leave a gift to St Paul’s when using the Octopus Legacy service, but after taking care of your loved ones, we would be incredibly grateful if you would consider doing so. Gifts from Wills of all sizes make a huge difference and play a very important part in securing St Paul’s future.

US Giving – The Colet Foundation

The Colet Foundation of St Paul’s School London is a 501(c)(3) registered charity, founded in 1991 to provide a meaningful and affordable way for our American community, the largest constituency of Old Paulines outside London, to have its own tailored way of supporting the philanthropic aims and ambitions of the school to help make St Paul’s better for future generations. The Foundation enables US donors to receive a tax deduction and, when available, matching grants from their employers.

British Schools and Universities Foundation

US residents are also able to make tax deductible donations in favour of St Paul’s School by giving to the British Schools and Universities Foundation, Inc (‘BSUF’), which is a charitable organisation recognised by the US Internal Revenue Service under section 501(c)(3) of their Codes. You can do so through the regular giving button above – please type the name of the Approved Institution as ‘St Paul’s School’ on the donation form.

BSUF was founded more than 40 years ago to allow US residents to support British schools and universities in a tax efficient manner, and today supports more than 100 such institutions. St Paul’s School is a full member, allowing our supporters to receive full tax exemption on their gifts.

Donations can be made online above or by downloading a US Donor Transmittal Form and sending it, together with your cheque (made payable British Schools and Universities Foundation), to BSUF at the address below. Please note that donors are asked to express a ‘preference’ for St Paul’s School in their covering letter – although such preferences are respected by the board of BSUF, the law requires all grants to be made at its sole discretion.

Payroll giving allows anyone who receives their pay through payroll to give regularly and on a tax-free basis. Payroll donations are deducted from your wages before tax so for every £1.00 you give, it will only cost you 80p, and if you are a higher rate tax payer it will only cost 60p. Please check with your payroll or HR department as to whether your company operates such a scheme.

We are grateful for any donations to St Paul’s, and donating shares is one of the most tax-effective ways of giving for a donor. You won’t have to pay any capital gains tax on the shares you donate and you can claim income tax relief as well.

Gift aiding your contribution allows us to reclaim an additional 25p in every £1, making your gift worth even more at no extra cost to you. Higher rate tax payers donating through Gift Aid can claim back the difference between the higher rate of tax and the basic rate of tax on the total valuation of their donation via their Self-Assessment Form. Please make sure you tick the ‘Gift Aid’ box if you qualify.
