Question - Travelling by Taxi

Number’s Nest Weekly Challenge
Three brothers, Alan, Bernard, and Chaucer, take a taxi together home from the airport.
Their homes lie along the same route;

Alan’s is 21 miles from the airport,

Bernard’s is 42 miles, and

Chaucer’s is 63 miles.

If the taxi fare is £12 and then £1.40 per mile
How many ways can you find to split the total cost fairly between the three travellers?

Question - Brushing your Teeth

Some dentists recommend that you brush your teeth twice a day for 2.5 minutes each time.

Assume for these problems that this recommendation has been followed. Also assume there are no leap years.

a) How many seconds per day of brushing are required by this recommendation?

b) Roughly how many hours would you brush your teeth in a year?

c) An average child will have 20 teeth by the time they are 3. If they follow the dentist recommendations and brush each tooth the same amount, for how many seconds will each tooth be brushed a day?

d) Some whale species have 240 teeth! How long would each tooth be brushed if they follow the dentists recommendations for a whole year?

(you can choose the most appropriate unit of time)

e) The first dinosaur tooth was discovered by Mary Ann Mantell near Brighton about 200 years ago. If the discoverers immediately followed the advice of dentists and brushed this tooth according to the recommendations, for about how many weeks would they have brushed this tooth since its discovery?

Time Conversion List: (Look these up if you don’t know them.)

60 seconds = 1 minute 365 days = 1 year

24 hours = 1 day 52 weeks = 1 year

7 days = 1 week

Total time brushing per day in mins = 5

1 min = 60 secs

5 mins = 60 secs x 5 = 300

365 days in a year. 300 seconds per day.

365 x 300 = 109500 seconds a year

Seconds in a minute = 60, minutes in an hour = 60

So, 60 x 60 seconds in an hour = 3600 seconds

109500 ÷ 3600 = 30.416666… = 30 full hours!

300 seconds brushing per day. 20 teeth.

300 ÷ 20 = 15 seconds

109500 seconds of brushing in a year. 240 teeth.

109500 ÷ 240 = 456.25 seconds or 7 minutes and 36.25 seconds

1 year = 109500, 200 years = 109500 x 200 = 21900000 seconds

21900000 ÷ 3600 = 6083 hours and 20 mins

6038 ÷ 24 = 253 days 253 ÷ 7 ~ 36 weeks of brushing!

Question - National Geographic

The first National Geographic magazine was published in September 1888.

Assume that the magazine was published every month of each year since the first publication. By the end of this year, how many National Geographic magazines would you have if you had one copy of each magazine? That is, how many magazines would be in the complete collection from September 1888 to December 2023?

Assuming each magazine has 145 pages, how many pages would be in one complete collection?

Assume that each issue is approximately 5mm thick. If you stacked the magazines from one complete collection one on top of the other, would the pile be taller than a double decker bus? Explain your reasoning.

Assume that each National Geographic magazine is 25.5 cm tall. If you laid the magazines from one complete collection end-to-end, would they go around a 400 m track?

Number of years from beginning of 1889 – 2023 = 134

134 x 12 = 1608 number of months and so number of issues

4 months left of 1888 (Sept – Dec) = 1612

1612 issues x 145 pages = 233160 pages

1612 x 5mm = 8060mm OR 8.06m a double decker bus is around 4m tall!

1612 X 255mm = 411060mm or 41106cm or 411.06m so, YES!
