At 11 am on 11 November 1918, an Armistice was declared and the First World War ended. After four years of ferocious fighting and destruction, this ceasefire marked the transition between war and peace.
SPARTA invites you to join a commemorative journey through the devastation of the War, exploring the causes that led to a mondial conflict and an exploration of the post-war world, guided by the expert view point of Mr Watts (Head of History SPS).
People’s hopes and aspirations, as well as the challenges facing individuals, societies and nations are all well depicted in the exhibition Making a New World: After the First World War. The students will cover this dramatic period with the help of beautiful photos and amazing video installations that portray the challenges of rebuilding entire countries after the devastation of war.
The visit is highly recommended because it covers important events within British and World history, using many source materials, including photographs, propaganda posters and famous paintings. Famous British artist and Old Pauline, Paul Nash, created many paintings showing the tragic effects of this war, some of which will be on display in this show. In relation to his work he wrote:
“I am a messenger who will bring back word from the men who are fighting to those who want the war to go on for ever. Feeble, inarticulate will be my message, but it will have a bitter truth, and may it burn in their lousy souls.”
Moreover, it is an exciting opportunity for the students to experience and remember the war of one hundred years ago that so greatly impacted the world. All who attend will have an opportunity to find clues within the exhibits for a special treasure hunt organised by SPARTA.
Meet at Museum Entrance of the Imperial War Museum at 11.30am on Sunday 24 March for a talk with Mr Watts followed by a tour. The cost is £10 per person or £20 for a family, paid for via the bookroom account. Please note that all children must be accompanied by an adult.
