Is cryptocurrency the future of money?
The motion for this year’s Pauline Perspectives provided a lively discussion for our six panellists, with Guy Ward-Jackson from the Lower Eighth being joined by Paul Tustain and Ben Woolgar to argue that cryptocurrency is not the future of money. Hari Collins from the Fifth Form argued the case for cryptocurrency alongside fellow panellists Linda Leaney and Dominic Frisby.
Linda brought in the example of Leicester City as a disruptor who comes along to break up the established order, just as cryptocurrency has done to the traditional currency market. Ben Woolgar fired back that, yes, cryptocurrency is just like Leicester City – a spectacular run to the front before quickly disappearing to obscurity again. After a lively debate, the vote at its conclusion was a tight affair, with the floor narrowly deciding that cryptocurrency will not represent money’s future after all.
